Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Roseway House in Jarrow.

Residents and staff took turns displaying their pancake-flipping prowess, many with great success. Regardless of whether anyone landed or missed the flip, everyone enjoyed delicious pancakes on Tuesday.

The history behind pancake flipping is quite a funny story, which is about a woman who lost track of time while cooking pancakes on Shrove Tuesday back in 1445. She was meant to go to church that morning and decided to have some pancakes beforehand. She heard the church bells ring and rushed out the door, racing towards the church while still holding her hot frying pan. It’s unclear whether she accidentally flipped it while running or purposely flipped it to avoid burning the pancake!
